I am always amazed at the inner experiences and connections people make while meditating on ‘The Sedona Spiritual Vortex Tour’. Sedona is the perfect place to allow the energies of the vortexes to gently relax you into what is really important in your life.
Today we are going to look at self forgiveness.
The last blog was on forgiving others. Well, how about forgiving yourself? Hasn’t there been times when you have been pretty hard on yourself? Maybe you thought you should or shouldn’t have done something, or you should or shouldn’t have said something that you did.
I have done some stupid and pretty embarrassing things in my life. At times (thank goodness rarely now, so spiritual practices do work)! I could hear myself say, “I should have known better.” Yes, but obviously I didn’t know better at the time, or I would have done something differently. There was plenty of room for self forgiveness.
The conditioned mind judges us from our now level of maturity, against where we were before we learned our lesson or healed that issue.
In this instance, I am making myself wrong for being on a learning curve with something. Even if my conditioned mind thinks I should have learned it before I actually did. Talk about a ploy to be set up for failure. See how the ego mind keeps us away from self forgiveness?
When something like this comes up for you, take a look at old beliefs and judgements you’re holding onto. In my case I looked back on my life and saw that there would be no other choice for me to have acted in those moments given my life experience.
If I could have done better I would have.
Once I saw what was causing the issue, I had choice and was able to let it go. We hold ourselves up to very high standards that we wouldn’t hold for others. Actually the ego does, and we aren’t the ego mind.
If you really can’t find the seed issue, that’s still ok. Who knows what lifetime it originated in anyway! At some point it’s just energy that needs to be released. As soon as we buy into a story we are now identified with the ego mind.
Just being willing to forgive yourself is huge!
But once the lesson has been learned or the issue resolved, let it go. The only reason you may not let it go, or picked it back up again is the conditioned mind will creep back in to be sure you stay stuck. Or at least hope that you think you are stuck.
The darn thing is so insidious we actually think it is us.
How often on the spiritual path, have you heard that you are too identified with the ego mind. We think it IS us. We own it by the things we say. “I am upset” “ I am worried” “I am angry” etc…
So how can you separate from something you think IS you? This is where self forgiveness gets easier, when you realize that it isn’t you!
It wasn’t until Michael Singer’s book, The Untethered Soul did that become more easeful for me. He has a chapter called ‘The Inner Roommate’. The idea is if you externalized the ego thought system, and personified it, would you hang out with it as a best friend?
The answer is always a resounding “NO!”
So how do you dis-identify with the ego mind? One way is to imagine it as a person you wouldn’t hang out with!
Even though it seems like more separation, the fact is some of us need a moment to catch ourselves and choose our Higher Self. It gives us an awareness of what we are NOT, and to choose in that moment what we ARE. It’s what I call the One-Second Cure. Choosing God/HigherSelf one second at a time as we become aware that we have stepped, yet again, into the ego realm.
And yet again we get to choose God/Higher Self.
So self forgiveness is to accept how identified with the conditioned mind we had been at one point in our life, and that we have not only learned from it, but let go of the illusion of it as well.
Choose again, and again and again, one-second at a time. ©
